Did you know that 4.7 million Filipino adults aged 20–79 were living with diabetes in 2024? Even more concerning, 1 out of 4 people with diabetes don’t know they have it.

In observance of World Diabetes Day, we’re sharing insights on diabetes and practical tips for its effective management.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. It’s a serious health condition that can lead to complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and even loss of toes, feet, or legs if left unmanaged.

Managing Diabetes and Living Your Best Life

Eat healthy. Reduce or eliminate sugary food and drinks. Focus meals on proteins and non-starchy vegetables.|Be active. Exercise at least 30 minutes, 5 times a week.|Monitor blood sugar levels. Check your blood pressure regularly.|Take medications. Know your medications. Take the right doses at the right times.|Reduce risk. Quit smoking. Do regular health exams (eye, foot, and dental).|Cope well. Seek support from family and friends. Set small, realistic health goals.|Recognize your high and low blood sugar. Understand what caused them and learn to treat and prevent them.
Remember, diabetes can be managed and, in many cases, prevented with the right lifestyle choices. Staying informed and proactive is the key to living well.
