One of the biggest environmental challenges facing the Philippines today is plastic waste. The country's tingi-tingi culture, while convenient for many households, contributes to the disposal of millions of sachets and plastic packaging every day. Much of this waste finds its way into waterways and drainage systems, contributing to environmental concerns such as flooding and pollution.

Recognizing the need for collective action, the Philippine government enacted Republic Act No. 11898 or the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act of 2022, which requires large organizations to take greater responsibility for the plastic packaging they introduce into the market.

At SM, however, sustainability efforts began long before regulations required them. Through innovative programs and everyday practices, we continue to help lead the shift toward more responsible consumption and waste management.

Turning Commitment Into Action

Across the SM Group, sustainability initiatives are designed to make environmentally responsible choices more accessible for customers and communities.

Encouraging reuse through the SM Green Bag. Through the SM Green Bag program, we encourage our customers to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics by choosing reusable shopping bags for their purchases. In 2025, alone, SM Markets sold 19 million reusable Green Bags, saving tens of millions of single-use plastic bags from ending up in the trash.

Promoting More Sustainable Choices through SM Green Finds. Customers can also find products that support a more sustainable lifestyle through SM Green Finds, a curated selection of eco-conscious products available across SM stores. By making these alternatives easier to discover, we help our customers make informed purchasing decisions that are kinder to the environment.

Supporting Circularity Through Trash to Cash. Through initiatives such as Trash to Cash, we provide communities with opportunities to recycle properly while promoting responsible waste management. We run recycling markets across our malls where the community can exchange their sorted trash for cash, keeping mountains of garbage out of our dumpsites.
